Umm...Not sure about the sound quality.

So this is a comparison review, new vs. old. I bought a new set off of Steep and cheap to replace an older pair that I bought about 4 years ago. The new ones have the inline mic. I bought these to use with my Droid phone, and I assumed they would have the same sound quality as the old pair, that did not have a mic, but an inline volume control slider. Well, when I got the new ones, put the old ones in the drawer as backups and kind of forgot about them. After using the new ones for a few weeks I realized that something was different, so I did a comparison test. Same song at the same volume from the same ipod. Wow, what a difference. The old pair had MUCH better bass response and were louder and clearer in general. These are essentially the same product here, both FMJ 11mm earbuds, but the difference between the two is huge. I am not sure, either they really changed the design in the last few years, or I got a defective pair. The new ones I would give maybe 2.5 stars, the old ones are more like a 4 or 4.5 for sound quality.

I bought a brand new pair of these off a friend who had just gotten them but ended up not wanting them because of the reviews he had read. I was looking for a spare set to go running in because my Shures had the foam earpieces and sweat would...never mind. They do sound great not as good as my shure E5 or E2 but great bass and decent treble. However the damm rubber pieces kept getting stuck in my ear or falling off as I was taking them out and after 3-4 runs and workouts I just left these at home I just didn't feel like dealing with it anymore. Pro's- Sounds great Cons- Shitty design flaws

These buds have good sound quality, but the metal cord is ridiculous- it picks up feedback off everything it rubs against. I'm really surprised more people aren't posting this, unless they have the fabric cord. Just really poor engineering.

These are f-ing dope. If you dont love these, you are most likely a spoiled bitch, or just a bitch. ScullCandy makes some sick ish, and the F.M.J. are just more proof that they know how to design and make a quality headphone/earbud. The F.M.J. fits my ear drum perfect, I ride with them in all day long and they never just pop out and never hurt my ears as other earbuds tend to do. The only time they ever fall out is if they get snagged on my helmet strap, glove, or jacket. I gots the F.M.J. with the mic on it and it goes perfect with my iPhone since Cali decided to pass out tickets for holding a phone to your ear. The 11mm driver will rattle your brain if you want it to, and the noise cancelation is amazing. I like to tune a lot of people out, and find the F.M.J. the best way to do so. Buy them, and you will love them.

Lawsuit waiting to happen

i just got these last night, first off a little disapointed because they do not have the volume adjuster on the cord as it did indicate on the website it had. sound quality is great, no complaints there. the issue i experienced is i had the foam ear peaces on, which were a little too easy to put on. so i put them in my ears and started to enjoy some of my favorite jams. however when i went to pull them out of my ears the earbuds came right out, but the foam peaces did not. the only way i was able to get them out was with a pair of tweezers. thankfully i did not push them deeper into my ear canal or do any damage to myself when trying to get them out. i can only see this as a potential lawsuit towards skull candy due to this desigh flaw. these are my third pair of ear buds from skull candy and i have not had this problem with any of the others (smokin buds, and titanium buds).

New design, new problems

By: FastPowSlayer (8)
February 23, 2010

So I just replaced my old full metal jackets, and this new design has some issues for me. First off its great that they had blackberry and i phone users on their mind when designing these, but it leaves anyone with a regular mp3 player to not have any mute or volume function anymore. So basically unless I am using my blackberry with these while I am boarding I cant mute or turn down my volume without diggin out my mp3 player from my pocket. Kinda Lame. The only improvements I see from the old designs were good ones though...the ear foams pieces are great, and getting rid of the rubberized cord that used to catch on everything and rip the buds from my ears.

Got these for my dad to use on his business trip. I tried them out and I almost didn't give them back, the sound is awesome, the coating on the wires made them much easier to work with than my other buds and the color selection is impressive. Plus you can't beat the lifetime warranty.

Potential Lawsuit

November 9, 2009

These just showed up last night much to my delight. First thing I noticed is that the covers that go over the speaker into your ear (rubber as well as foam) go on and off the earbuds super easy. This concerned me a little. So I popped on the foam covers (causes the rubber ones completely suck) and started rocking out to some of my favorite jams. After about 15 minutes of listening I took the ear buds out, however when I took them out the foam tips were no longer on the earbuds, but rather still stuck in my ear canal. The only way I was able to get these out of my ears was by using a pair of tweezers. Thankfully I didn’t push them any deeper into my ear canal or damage my ear by having to stick a metal object deep into my ear to pull these out. These “WERE” my 3rd pair of earbuds from Skull Candy and I have never had this problem with any others (Smokin Buds and Titanium Buds). Though the sound quality of the Full Metal Jacket buds are good, the risk of having something stuck in my ear canal each time I take them out and possibly damaging my ear drum trying to get them out is not worth the risk. I ABOSLUTLEY WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THESE TO ANYONE. Save yourself a few bucks and go for the Titanium buds.

The headphones seem alright. I have a pair of SkullCandy Titans that are at the manufacturer for warranty issues. SkullCandy has great customer service. These arrived in a ziplock bag. There was no carrying case for them. Steap and Cheap has never done me wrong like that. But for thirty bucks, I guess that was a gamble I took. They are 100 times better than stock IPOD headphones. They have a little more bass and a little better sound quality than the Titans.

November 28, 2009

I broke my old FMJs and Skullcandy sent me a new pair with their kickass warranty. They changed up the wire this time around so that its not rubbery feeling. The wires are metal and then plastic cased and last through some rough beatings. The sound quality is amazing as usual. There's more options for what bud you want in your ear (they have foam options now) but I find the regular ones work for me. I usually don't notice that I have them in, and sometimes use them without music playing just to block out annoying people. The wires splitting to make it longer or shorter means I don't end up getting strangled.

These are frequently on whiskeymilitia.com for about $30, which is where I picked mine up. I think these are the best sounding ear buds I've ever used, great bass and no tinny highs, very full sound. I discovered after I bought these that I have tiny ears (random and strange, I know) because I can't wear them for very long w/out my ears becoming irritated, even with the smallest covers on. So, if you already know that you have small ears, I would say don't get them, which again is highly random, but I just wanted to put that out there.

i bought these on a recommendation and based on other reviews saying they worked well for small ears... unfortunately, they were still way too big for me even with the smallest silicone piece. if you have issues with earbuds being too big, these probably won't work either.

FMJ w/ Inline mic

By: Philip (0)
December 30, 2009

I have the Black ones, with metallic cable, and the inline mic/toggle, and use it with my iPhone. Bought these at an airport when my normal earbuds totally flaked out two months ago. GREAT BASS sound. Nice style.. These stay in my ear better than the type that sit in the groove on your ear (maybe it's just me, I don't see anyone else have issues, but if I move around much the other type never stay in). Once again it may be just be, but I am able to turn these up louder on the bus to work without requests from people to turn my music down.. That equals a more enjoyable music experience for me, AND the people around me. With my old earbuds outside noise would get through to me, and my "irritating" hi-hats would get through to 50 somethings on the commuter bus, and despite turning them way up I couldn't hear as much, and bass? Forget about it. I see some are not happy about the quality... well I've only had them two months so far, so I can't say too much.. hope they stay in good shape. I stuff them in a small pocket on top of my backpack, and they don't get tangled too bad either.. Why not 5 stars? I can't stand the toggle sometimes.. with my apple earbuds, the toggle worked flawless: single tap is pause, double tap to next track, triple to go back. With these: The button is "jerky" so It's sometimes harder to get the same sensitivity (easier to mistakenly press twice instead of a clean triple tap) Its one tiny button to locate (a pain in the neck when wearing gloves. The whole mic is like one big button with the apple ones), And a lot of times the unit arbitrarily decides what your button taps mean: Like I may mean to double tap, but it's not quick enough, and it treats it as a triple tap??? Never if I try to do that on purpose though. Verdict: Good sound quality, but not so great mechanics on the toggle. But you buy earphones for sound in the end right?.. by that measure it trumps any I've ever used.

Quality Problem

By: gal3180119 (0)
July 27, 2009

Agree with the sound quality, nice look, useful in the gym, etc. etc. But unfortunately (and consistent with many other reviews) something about these headphones are poorly engineered. 3GS comments (maybe applicable to other devices): o For whatever reason, when the plug is fully inserted, iPhone 3GS skips between recognizing the headphone mic and not -- result is constant clicking and the sound adjusts between volume settings o The mic button doesn't seem to do anything o No volume control My solution over the weekend -- before deciding to return -- was to slightly pull the headphone connector out such that 3GS is forced into one mode of operation. Using this hack, the headphones produce great sound (full bass and clear high ranges). That said, I can get even better sound quality and more confident engineering (no mic) with etymotics for the same price.

The new foam pads are RAD! They are like ear plugs, which mold to your ear. I use these for biking and running and with these new pads they don't fall out. Sound quality is good for buds, the inline mic is slick and the cord tends not to knot. Good buy.

I was super bummed on my last pair of these when the cord ripped out from the top and exposed the wiring. I sent them back to skullcandy and they sent me the newest full metal jackets with the wire wrapped cord. very very lovely. Its been over a year and they are still fine after sitting in my car in 100 degree heat or on the mountain in 20 degree temps. Good update skullcandy and thanks for the great warranty.

Okay, if you like random static with your music

By: p.lorimer2128180 (0)
July 7, 2009

I picked these up on Brociety for less than $40 with shipping. They're going back. Just sitting at my desk typing, these headphones (the 11mm) were okay. The sound was mediocre, good bass, okay highs and muddy mids. I can deal with that for $40 headphones. What I can't deal with is the random static noise that I got. I could be sitting completely still and they'd crackle. I'd try moving them around and they wouldn't crackle. I gave them an 8 hour work day and they crackled about every other song. Save your money for something better.

Not worth it

By: Zack (0)
June 15, 2009

I am fucking tired of dealing with these headphones. The sound quality is good and thats the only good thing about them. This is my 7th pair of full metal jacket earbuds. Backcountry advertised these ear buds with inline volume control switches and they dont. they arent durable at all; they break easily at the cord splitter. I'm in engineering as my profession and the design makes no sense to me and my associates; its has some shortfalls. I would pay $40 dollars for them if i knew they were durable but they arent. I have 2 other friends that have the same earbuds and we all agree that they are overpriced. Thank god for backcountry's costumer service.

December 27, 2009

I really love these earphones! They are excellent quality as far as sound. However, the cloth wrapped around the wires had ripped since the second day I had them and have continued to rip in other places. Thankfully, the wire it self is still in tact. Also, I have never had in-ear headphones before like these. They sometimes make my ear sore after extended use. But I think that is also just a preference thing. Really good earphones though, and I have received so may complements on them! It's an awesome color, really.

These don't have the highest quality sound, but with the 11 mm driver you get a pretty serious bang for your buck. The braided cord is solid and doesn't get as tangled as the rubber coated cord of my Smokin's. Bottom line, get them on steep and cheap and you will be more than happy.

Compared to Bose..

By: Kylezdaname (7)
January 31, 2010

I will start off my saying I love these headphones. My previous pair were the Bose in-ears and they lasted me 2 years until the cord-to-jack started coming loose.. The sound was unbeatable believe me. Ill give you some pros and cons for the Bose: PROS(Bose): -Lots of bass, to where I had to used treble booster for EQ -The sound quality beat all other in-ears I've ever tried. -The soft, cushiony tips are a great design; Some people hate the whole "ear plug" design. These are comfortable to where you forget they're there. -Durable, long lasting. (if you take care of them) CONS(Bose): -Very long, rubbery cord that tangles -Not very stylish -Won't stay put if you're jogging or something like that. (didnt for me atleast) -Didn't block enough sound for me. But surprisingly blocked a lot more than I thought- seriously. Okay so the Bose's quality and sound pretty much make up for all the CONS so for $100 bucks, you can't beat it. Here's some pros and cons for the Skullcandy FMJ's: PROS(FullMetalJackets): -Cord is made of a sort of fabric material that never tangles -Has a mic and call button. (You can pay $120 for Bose in-ears with mic) -The cord length is perfect -Look great! -They really stay put in the ear..I never have to adjust them, Ever! -Durable, metal design -Sound iight. Can't complain to much. CONS(FullMetalJackets): -Not nearly enough bass for me. (Bose has like 3x more/ the Skullcandy Ink'd budds have a lil more than these) -Sound quality isn't worth $70 at all. Okay so my only issue with the FMJ's is the sound- it could be better. If your looking for a good solid pair of headphones that stay in your ear, look way cool, sound okay, and don't bother you to much, get these. If you want incredible sound quality with A LOT of bass (which i love!) and don't mind paying an extra $30 dollars, then I'd HIGHLY recommend the Bose. They don't look 'cool' but its Bose, what do you expect?..

I Love You, Bud....

By: iam2880774 (0)
October 27, 2009

Highest sound quality ive ever gotten out of an earbud. Very portable with skullcandy pouch. Im listening to Chevell Sci Fi Crimes "Mexican Sun" right now and im like F*CK YEAH! Dont break very easily or will at least last longer than other competing buds as they are built with aluminum coat to protect their wires. Durable. Do very well in cold or hot weather. If your on the slopes and are worrying about them falling out, just put a beanie on over your ears, they wont. Comes with a variety of interchangable buds, for consumer pleasure, each having a different feel and fit for slightly smaller or larger ears. You can expect at least 6 months to a year out of these buds. I love you bud....... These buds also have sound blocking abilities. So go buy yourself a full metal jacket and dont worry about crappy soundwaves piercing through your bubble.

October 27, 2009

These are good headphones for the money - got mine for 30 bucks on Brociety. The sound quality is very good for the most part. There are a few irritating things, though. First, the plastic ear pieces (a selection of different sizes come with the phones) come apart from the main part very easily (i.e. in your pocket), and I'm expecting to lose mine. There is some wire noise when you move your head around, and you get a lot of wind noise if you're riding a bike and not wearing a hat. All in all, I like them. Mine don't crackle or give static as mentioned below.

got these because i love skullcandy's earbuds, but they all kept breaking. this thing is legit fully covered in metal, its not breaking anytime soon. These ARE NOT the same quality as Bose earbuds, but nobody ever said that they were supposed to blow your mind. These thinks kill bass.
